There are magnets built into the corners of the towel. Fold a corner over anything metal — the gym machine you are using, a bench frame, a tennis net post, a railing, a car door — and it grips. Fold two corners together and they hold to each other, so the towel hangs flat rather than sliding onto the floor.

That smell comes from a towel staying wet. Because microfibre dries quickly — especially hung flat by its magnetic corners — it spends far less time damp, which is when the problem starts.
